News from the Star Fleet
The Main Sheet 9/4/23
The Lake Sunapee Sailing season is almost complete, with the Stars wrapping up and the Cruising Fleet still having one makeup day to go. The Cruising Fleet had some exciting races on Thursday the 30th and will complete the season with a makeup this Wednesday, 9/6. For full results and more information go to www.lscf.us.
Labor Day sailing kicked off with three great races on Saturday. A new skipper Jacki Buros Novik joined the fun starting at the committee boat in her first star boat race! She finished third in this race, Great job! Peter Follansbee, Scott Beckman and Mike Kelly were 1st and 2nd and 3rd respectively for the final Labor Day series. Robin Cook finished her last race as our race committee chair ending a (50) fifty year span of service to the Lake Sunapee Star Fleet and the Lake Sunapee Yacht Club. A special thanks is not enough, so we have named the race committee boat “The Robin”.
The weekend finished with the annual Susie Williamson and Joe Goodnough Labor Day picnic. This year we had an unexpected gift of salmon, swordfish, and tuna steaks that made for a better than ever picnic including angus burgers and beef hot dogs. Thank you to all the volunteers who helped. Next year, please support our family club tradition and step forward as a volunteer so we can continue to enjoy the camaraderie as we meet new members, and enjoy old friendships. Next Up is the Octoberfest. Hope to see you there!
It's been a great season and we look forward to more fun next year – definitely reach out to [email protected] or [email protected] if you’re interested in Stars! And feel free to follow along on Facebook at Lake Sunapee Star Fleet – District 12, or Instagram at sunapeestarfleet for pictures and updates.

Despite the forecast, this past weekend’s weather was sunny and windy enough for some of the last races of the season for both the Star Fleet and the Cruising Fleet. The Star Fleet got out on the water on Saturday after the end of season meeting, and the Cruising Fleet sailed on Sunday. And of course that’s in addition to the regular sailing and lessons during the week!
Chris Eldridge/Mike Miramonti took first place in the first two Star races, with Scott Beckman/Chase Beckman winning the third race. Michéle Wood/Mike Wood also sailed well, and newcomer Jane Wirch had a great first Star boat outing with Andy Ivey as her crew. The fleet is always enthusiastic about potential new members, so do reach out to a fleet member if you’d like to get out on the water! Mike Kelly with Erin Kelly/Chris Merola as his crew won the 2023 August Series overall.
Part of the end of season Star meeting included voting in a new leadership committee as the terms of the existing committee expired. The nominations of Michéle Wood (Fleet Captain), Blake Baade (Lt. Fleet Racing), Andy Ivey (Fleet Development), Erin Kelly (Fleet Secretary), Lovelynn Ivey (Assistant Secretary), Mike Kelly (Director), and Peter Durant (Director) were confirmed. A huge thanks to the outgoing committee members: Andy Ivey (Fleet Captain), Dave Cook (Lt. Fleet Racing), John Wulff (Fleet Development), and Lovelynn Ivey (Fleet Secretary).
The Labor Day Series is this upcoming weekend and will wrap up the Lake Sunapee Star sailing for the season. There are races on Saturday 9/2 and Sunday 9/3, followed by the end of season Susie Williamson & Joe Goodnough awards picnic on Monday 9/4 (Labor Day). You must make reservations through the fleet by emailing: [email protected]. Non-fleet members are more than welcome, $15 per person (cash or check only). And mark your calendars for Octoberfest on Saturday, October 7th (more information to come)!
The Cruising Fleet sailed on Wednesday and Sunday (for results and more info go to www.Lscf.us), and Series B will continue on Wednesday 8/30 for a scheduled race and a makeup on Wednesday 9/6. The Fleet had a wonderful banquet on Saturday night full of camaraderie and excitement for how great this summer’s sailing has been.

The Star Fleet had another nice day of racing this past Saturday. The fleet sailed two races in pretty heavy wind, and had 4 boats for the first race and 3 for the second race. We were excited to have Jim Morris, a new Star skipper, on the water for the 2nd weekend in a row, and there was another new participant as Chris Merola crewed for Mike Kelly. They were joined by the familiar faces of Nat Cook, Paul Skarin, Andy Ivey, Michele Wood, Mike Wood, Chris Eldredge, and Mike Miramonti for some good competition. Robin and Dave Cook did a fantastic job of Race Committee as always, helped out this past weekend by Lovelynn Ivey and Libby Morris. Robin and Dave will be wrapping up their storied tenure as Race Committee with the Labor Day Series, and we will miss them greatly!
There are two more Star sailing weekends this season, with 3 races scheduled for this Saturday 8/26 and the Labor Day Series Saturday 9/2 and Sunday 9/3. Reach out to a fleet member if you’d like to join in, or feel free to head out on the water in your own boat to watch the races. The Star Fleet end of season meeting is this Saturday the 26th at 9 am, and the Labor Day series will be followed by the Susie Williamson & Joe Goodnough awards picnic on Monday 9/4 (Labor Day). You must make reservations through the fleet by emailing: [email protected].
The Cruising Fleet sailed on Wednesday and Sunday (for results and more info go to www.Lscf.us), and will sail 3 times in this upcoming week. Wednesday 8/23 will be a regular day of sailing, and Thursday 8/24 and Sunday 8/27 will be makeups for previous races.

The Main Sheet 8/7/23
This weekend was the Lake Sunapee Open and the NextGen Regatta, and we were blessed with fantastic weather two out of the three sailing days. And almost more unusual for this summer – some nice cooperative wind! The Open consisted of five races over two days, with the wind ranging from light to whitecaps. There were a number of wind shifts as usual and as is almost always the case, some sailors found themselves on the right end of those shifts and some on the wrong end. Everyone out on the water enjoyed the stiff competition and blowing winds. Out of twenty boats, John MacCausland/Brad Nichol won the Open (John for the 9th time!), with Andy Ivey/Reid Krakower in second and Steve Braverman/Ron Rezac in third. Peter Follansbee/Nat Cook placed fourth overall and won the first race on Saturday. A huge thank you to the race committee for an outstanding job and the co-chairs of the Open, Lovelynn Ivey, Jenn Nolin, and Chip Nolin!
The NextGen Regatta (for Star skippers 25 years old and under) was also a huge success, with a whopping ten boats. The Friday weather was a bit iffy, but they were able to squeeze in two exciting races before thunderstorms rolled in. Some of the boats had to be towed back to the yacht club due to the impending storms, but everyone made it safely! Kelson Shea/Brad Nichol won the day, with Diego Escobar/Chip Nolin in second and Will Fairfax/Blake Baade in third. It was a fantastic event for fleet development and for getting young sailors interested in Star boats.

This week, the Sonars had a successful race on Wednesday, although the other divisions were cancelled for lack of wind. The “Around the Islands” race is this Saturday, August 12th. For results go to www.Lscf.us.
Our recap of this week’s events would be incomplete without mentioning the huge loss of John Chiarella, who passed on Thursday of last week. He was Commodore of the LSYC in the 1980s, a huge proponent of the Star Fleet, and until his death held the position of Commodore of the International Star Class Yacht Racing Association. He will be missed.
Thursday August 10th we are hosting the Rig It Up regatta. This is a great event with junior sailors from all around coming to compete on Lake Sunapee in both Opti’s and 420’s. Please head out on the water to watch some of the fun.

There were no races scheduled for the Star Fleet this week, as the Fleet wanted to give non-Star sailors the opportunity to get out on the water with a Star skipper and learn more about these fun and challenging boats. Andy Ivey, Star Fleet Captain, was able to take some interested sailors out for a bright and sunny (and enjoyable!) experience.
In regards to the Cruising Fleet, Wednesday night was beautiful for sailing. Fresh winds and sunny evening. 7 Sonars, 5 keel boats and 4 center boards raced. Our next weekend race will be the “Around the Islands” Saturday, August 12. For results go to www.Lscf.us

It was a great day for sailing with 8-10 knots of wind direction off the Western shore and Granliden Bay. Two races were sailed on a course up the first leg to a windward mark, and back down to a leeward mark twice around. A perfect breeze for Star sailing with 5 boats trading places on each leg of the course; plenty of excitement! Andy and Lovelynn Ivey led the way to finish the first race, but Peter Durant and his wife Alison led the way in the second race. Results of the day: Ivey/Ivey, Durant/Durant, Cook/Skarin, Eldridge/Miramonti, Lidbeck/Wulff.
This week provided a lot of great sailing for the Cruising Fleet. Wednesday was a beautiful night with reasonable winds to start the first of the B series. We sailed Thursday night for the A series makeup -ending that series, There were variable winds to light. Division 1 was able to finish the race. Division 2's did not have enough wind to start. Sunday was another beautiful day and we were able to get 2 races completed. Winds were fluky but ended with a nice strong wind. For results go to Race Results - 2023 - Lake Sunapee Cruising Fleet (lscf.us).

The wind was again uncooperative for the Star boats to race on Saturday, but some sailors were able to get out on the water for a very enjoyable practice. There’s been enough iffy weather this summer already – hopefully it turns around for the next few weeks!
The Cruising Fleet was able to race on Wednesday night, and there were no races scheduled for Sunday. Please go to www.lscf.us for complete results. This week there will be races on Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday, and if you sign up for Sail a Sonar, you will have a chance to race onboard with the instructors on Wednesday (take a look at the results, they’re doing well!).

Well here we are again, no wind on Saturday and thunderstorms and rain on Sunday. That is the wet, wet, wet theme of the summer so far. Hopefully Mother Nature will take note and bring some sunshine and wind for the rest of the summer.
The Cruising Fleet had a beautiful night for their Wednesday race and were able to complete one race on Sunday before the storms hit. Please go to www.lscf.us for complete results. There will be a Tactics Clinic given by Brian Doyle at the Club this Saturday the 15th at 9 am. All are welcome.
